The number 24 describes potential inputs, not an automatic electrical rating or a promise that every project should populate all positions. A suitable unit also needs the correct operating and open-circuit voltage, individual string-current capacity, combined output-current capacity, DC-rated protective devices, environmental protection, monitoring and termination details. This guide concentrates on those 24-input decisions. For a broader introduction to combiner roles and DC versus AC arrangements, see our PV combiner box guide.

What “24-string” means in an actual array

A string is a series-connected set of PV modules. Parallel strings feed a collector, often through individual protective paths, before the combined circuit travels toward the inverter. The combiner’s input count is therefore an architectural constraint: a nominal 24-input enclosure may serve fewer than 24 occupied positions, but it cannot safely accept a 25th string merely because the total current appears low. Designers must also consider spare positions, routing, and whether the resulting output circuit fits the inverter’s input arrangement. Some inverters accept multiple direct string inputs and do not need the same external combining architecture.

El LBAJI LHLX-PV24/Z/D photovoltaic DC bus box product page describes combining up to 24 string inputs into one or more outputs. The exact output count, monitoring and components depend on the ordered configuration. Its closed-door product photo identifies the enclosure, not its internal wiring or the suitability of a particular build for a particular array. Do not infer fuse quantity, polarity arrangement or terminal size from the outside image alone.

Start with an input schedule, not an enclosure size

Prepare an input schedule before requesting a box. List the number of strings now and the number reserved for later expansion. For each string group, record module model, module count in series, expected short-circuit current, maximum-power current, temperature-adjusted maximum open-circuit voltage and cable route. Confirm that strings combined at a common operating point have compatible electrical behavior; combining unlike string lengths or orientations without an appropriate design can cause mismatch and poor performance. The inverter design determines whether the combined output should be a single circuit or several circuits feeding separate MPPT channels.

Pregunta sobre el diseño

Evidence to request

Why 24 inputs change the decision

Input population

String schedule and spare-position plan

Shows the actual number of occupied, labeled and future inputs

Maximum voltage

Cold-temperature string Voc calculation and exact equipment nameplate

Every device on the common DC path must be rated for the calculated maximum

Individual string current

Module Isc, design factors and specified fuse/disconnect data

Parallel strings affect reverse-current and protection decisions

Combined output

Current calculation, busbar and output-device ratings, inverter input data

The outgoing circuit may carry the contribution of many strings

Physical terminations

Conductor sizes, glands, polarity plan and cable bend-space drawing

Two dozen incoming cable pairs need orderly entry and maintainable labels

Monitoreo

Required string measurements, alarms, communication map and power source

Fault location becomes harder without string-level identity

Do not use a multiplication of 24 by a module’s nameplate current as the sole output-device selection rule. The approved electrical design must apply the relevant current factors and equipment ratings for its jurisdiction. IEC 62548-1 addresses PV array design, including DC wiring, protection, switching and earthing provisions. The applicable edition and national rules must be checked for the project.

Voltage is a system calculation, not a model-name shortcut

DC voltage is particularly unforgiving because interruption does not benefit from the regular current zero-crossings found in AC. A string’s maximum open-circuit voltage rises as cell temperature falls. Calculate the site-specific cold-condition Voc from the selected module data and compare that result with every connected component: connectors, fuses and holders, surge protective devices, disconnect or breaker, busbars, monitoring circuits, output cable and inverter. The label “24-string” says nothing about these voltage ratings.

There is a further procurement reason to ask for a signed datasheet. The current LBAJI product page contains differing voltage figures in its overview, feature list and technical table. They should not be read as interchangeable ratings for one unit. Specify the exact LHLX configuration and request a nameplate drawing and verified component schedule before selecting a DC voltage class. This is especially important when an existing design is being moved from a lower-voltage array to a higher-voltage array. An enclosure that fits the same number of strings may still need entirely different protection and insulation components.

The photographed enclosure is a product-family reference; confirm the ordered internal configuration separately.

String protection and reverse-current questions

In a parallel group, healthy strings can feed a faulted string. The need for individual overcurrent protection, and its device rating, depends on the module’s maximum series-fuse rating, array configuration, conductor capacity and governing code. A 24-input combiner commonly provides individual string paths, but the correct fuse specification cannot be copied from another project’s bill of materials. Ask whether both polarities require devices under the actual grounding arrangement, and whether fuse holders have the appropriate DC breaking and isolation characteristics. An AC-rated substitute is not an acceptable shortcut.

Keep the roles of devices separate. A string fuse addresses certain overcurrent conditions; an output circuit breaker or switch may provide a different protective or isolation function; a surge protective device manages transient overvoltage within its design limits. None makes the circuit safe to open under any condition without an approved procedure. The product page describes string fuses and lightning/surge protection among its available features. The purchase document should identify the precise devices, ratings, certificates and drawings in the supplied configuration.

For field context, the National Renewable Energy Laboratory’s field guide discusses measurements at PV combiners and warns that apparently opened sections can remain hazardous when a system lacks isolation at appropriate points. Its diagnostic procedure is not a substitute for a site-specific safe-work method. Only qualified personnel should test, isolate or modify a live PV DC system.

Output circuits and the inverter boundary

One 24-input box can be configured with one or more outputs; the cable and protective-device sizing follow the actual output topology. Confirm the inverter’s maximum DC input voltage, allowed current per input or MPPT, reverse-polarity requirements and any integrated disconnects or fusing. Also verify the route to the inverter: conductor insulation, voltage drop, support, separation and environmental exposure can change both cable size and installation cost. An apparently economical combiner can be poor value if its output arrangement forces an oversized cable run or loses the intended MPPT separation.

Do not confuse a DC combiner with equipment after inversion. The Caja de bus CA fotovoltaica LHLX-AC is a different product family on the AC side. A BWG-800 photovoltaic grid-connected cabinet serves a later grid-connection function. The following images show those different enclosures as context; neither is an alternative 24-string DC combiner.

AC collection happens after inversion and needs an AC-specific equipment specification.

Enclosure, cable entries and installation environment

For outdoor installation, review the complete enclosure assembly rather than only a claimed IP number. Gland selection, door seals, mounting orientation, drainage, UV exposure, condensation, corrosion and temperature rise all matter. A nominally sealed box can lose protection when field-drilled entries are poorly placed or a cable bend forces the door seal open. Ask for an installation drawing showing permitted entries, wall clearance, mounting height, weight and service access. The project should also evaluate expected ambient temperature and solar loading against protective-device derating and monitoring electronics limits.

The LBAJI listing describes outdoor wall mounting and an IP65 protection level for the series. That is useful as a starting point, not proof that a modified, field-installed configuration will retain the same rating. Confirm the construction and test evidence for the actual order. IEC 61439-2:2020 includes supplementary requirements for assemblies used in photovoltaic installations; check whether and how the offered assembly claims conformity, rather than assuming a standard number applies automatically.

Monitoring can make 24 inputs manageable

With many strings, a combined current reading alone can hide a single failed string. A monitored version may report individual string current, common bus voltage, internal temperature, breaker or surge-protection status and alarms. The LBAJI product page describes an intelligent option with Hall-sensor-based string measurements and RS485/Modbus-RTU communication. Confirm which features are actually fitted and ask for the register map, measurement accuracy, alarm logic, communication cable requirements and auxiliary-power arrangement. A protocol name is not enough to integrate a supervisory system.

Plan the labeling and commissioning record before installation. Every string position should map to a physical array location, cable identifier and monitoring address. Otherwise a “string 17 low current” alarm is not actionable. Establish an acceptance test for input polarity, circuit identification, communication and the as-left settings. Record baseline currents under comparable irradiance so subsequent operation can detect deviations. Monitoring can support diagnosis, but it does not eliminate the need for electrical isolation and qualified inspection.

The grid-connected cabinet is a downstream equipment example, not a 24-string DC combiner.

A useful request-for-quotation package

Send suppliers the array single-line diagram, string schedule, cold-condition voltage calculation, inverter datasheet, required output arrangement, site environment and applicable standards. Request a configuration-specific drawing, component list, nameplate data, enclosure details, terminal and gland schedule, heat assessment where relevant, monitoring documentation and factory test records. State the required spare input positions and whether future expansion is physically and electrically possible. If substitutions are proposed, require an explicit deviation list rather than silently accepting “equivalent” DC components. For a voltage-class-specific discussion, see our 1000V DC combiner box guide; for a related cable-interface concern, see our photovoltaic connectors guide.

Ask how the box will be inspected and maintained in its installed position, including access to replace a device without disturbing other circuits. Confirm packaging, identification and documentation for export if the project is international. A procurement comparison should look beyond purchase price to cable routing, commissioning time, monitoring integration and maintenance access. The core decision is not whether “24” appears in the model name; it is whether one documented configuration meets the array design and can be safely built and operated.

Further viewing: This neutral educational overview explains the general role of a solar PV combiner.
